Avoid Moving Company Fraud

Unfortunately, many people each year are fooled by fraudulent companies that represent themselves as professional movers. The good news is that these companies aren’t difficult to spot if you know what to look for.

By becoming aware of the signs of a moving company that is not ethical, honest or professional you can easily avoid making the mistake of hiring these companies. One very important way to avoid being scammed is to work with a reputable, established mover. Choosing a company you have never heard of or seen before that is offering an incredibly low price is the biggest mistake you can make.

Additionally, here are some other signs of a moving company that is at best a poor choice or at worse trying to scam innocent people of their hard-earned money.

No Written Estimate or Contract

A reputable moving company will have no problem in providing a written estimate for the work they will perform. You can request a binding estimate, which means that the movers will only charge that much and no more, even if the load turns out to be more than they anticipated. However, if it is less than they anticipated you also don’t get a reduction. Typically, these types of estimates are very accurate.

A non-binding contract means that the estimate is an approximation but the actual price will depend on the weight on the truck. A scam company will give very low non-binding estimates, typically without explaining the meaning and then double or triple the price once your things are on the truck. They may even hold your furniture “hostage” until you pay.

The estimate should be in writing and should include an itemized list of all services required or requested for the move. If the estimate is not in writing or doesn’t stipulate the services, the mover is using it may be a scam.

Accepts Only Cash and a Big Deposit

No reputable moving company only accepts cash. Ask in advance about payment options and also if there is a need for a deposit in advance of the move. If there is a deposit required, it should be based on the size of the move and should never exceed more than 20-30% of the estimate. Most companies will require a deposit for long distance moves.

Finally, check online for reviews of the company. An established, professional moving company will have a website, an office and a phone number that is answered by a professional working for the company during business hours. Phones answered by voicemail or that just ring and ring during business hours tend to indicate a scam company.
