When you buy soda pop, beer, or other beverages at your grocery store, you may choose bottles over cans. After all, many people prefer the taste of bottled beverages and it is very handy to buy bottles in a 6 pack bottle carrier. Today’s carriers are inexpensive and provide a lot of conveniences. However, the 6 pack and bottles are relatively new inventions when you look at how long mankind has been on the planet. Here is information on how bottles and the 6 pack came into being and how they became the great things they are today.
Bottles
What is a bottle? A bottle can be defined as a container that is smaller at the top and larger at the bottom. Most bottles are known for their “neck” features. The neck provides a shape that is easy to handle and drink from.
Another important feature of the bottle is the top or cap. After all, without a bottle top, liquid or material would easily spill out and quickly lose its freshness and appeal.
History
Early bottles were used thousands of years ago and were made from clay fired in ovens. In fact, this type of construction changed very little until the glass bottle appeared on the scene.
Glass Bottles
Glass bottles fist showed up around 2500 years ago in the Roman Empire. In fact, it was the Romans who perfected the art of glass blowing. Up until the dawn of the 21st Century, glass bottles were all blown by hand, and it was an expensive and time-consuming process. A glass blower was considered to be a craftsman. After the bottle blowing machine was perfected, bottles could be mass produced, and soon become commonplace.
Six Pack
Have you ever wondered where the six pack came from? The Coca-Cola company is credited with inventing the six-pack bottle carrier for the beverage industry. In the early 20th Century (1923) Coke was sold by the bottle and, of course, it would not be easy to carry several bottles home with you, so they developed a handy cardboard carton that held six bottles of coke. The carton had two flaps with oblong holes creating a carrying handle.
It didn’t take long for the six pack bottle carrier to catch on and before long breweries were selling their beer this way. However, plastic six-pack holders didn’t appear until the 1960s and up until a few years ago they were made from soft plastic. Many newer 6 pack bottle carrier materials are made from a stronger plastic that is economical and eco-friendly.
