Types of Wood Flooring

When you are having your floors redone, or maybe you are building a new home, you will need to select what type of flooring to use. Most homes now just use carpet. Carpet is cheap and easy to install, so it reduces construction costs compared to another type, but there are much better options. Here are some of the different wood flooring options available to you.

Hardwood

Hardwood is one of the most popular flooring types right now. This is thanks to its warm, inviting feeling. While hardwood may be the most popular type now, at one time people carpeted over hardwood flooring. If your house is more than 30 or so years old, it may be worth checking under your carpet. You may already have hardwoods. If not, then you will likely want to hire a professional if you want to have hardwood floors installed in San Antonio.

Laminate

Laminate is something of a poor man’s hardwood. Laminate flooring is made by layering waste wood into a sheet and printing a wood grain pattern on top. You can also buy engineered wood flooring which is similar to laminate but has a layer of real wood on top as opposed to a printed pattern. Laminate floors are easier to install than real hardwoods and cost significantly less, but are not going to have the same warm look and feel. They are also unlikely to be quite as durable.

Bamboo

Bamboo is a fairly new flooring type, but it is quickly growing in popularity. This is because it is a very durable and strong material, but it is fast and easy to produce. The problem with hardwoods is that they can take over 100 years for a tree to be ready to use. Bamboo, on the other hand, only takes three to five years before it is ready to harvest.

While hardwood flooring may offer the best look and feel compared to other types of wood flooring, it is also the most expensive and hardest to produce. By switching to laminate or bamboo, you will save much money and be using a greener flooring alternative.
