Understanding The Different Styles Of Nose Rings

by | Aug 27, 2014 | Jewelry

While earrings are typically very simple in design and offer very little difference in the actual style of the shaft that is inserted into the earlobe, nose rings come in a wide variety of styles. This is actually a big benefit since different styles are more suitable for different wearers and for different effects.

If you are trying out different types of nose rings after your piercing has healed it is a good idea to buy one or two of one design style and try them out before investing in expensive rings. Choose acrylic or surgical steel as your trial styles and then, if you like them and they are comfortable to wear, move into buying the gold and gemmed versions.

Captive Bead

The captive bead nose rings are very popular for both men and women. They are similar to a small hoop earning but they are not continuous, there is a little break in the hoop to allow you to place it through the piercing. Then, a small bead is place in the gap and the pressure or tension of the ring holds the bead in place to secure the ring.

These rings, once you get the hang of opening them and placing the bead, can be worn continually and you can just pop different beads in and out to create a different look.

Curved Barbell

This is just is just slightly curved from a straight line. Usually the two ends, or one end can be removed and you can change gems or ends without having to completely remove the piercing. This is also a popular option for both men and women and they are also found in metals as well as acrylic. The ends are often balls but can also be ornate designs or geometric shapes.

Studs and Screws

A popular option in nose rings, especially for women, is the stud. This is just like a pierced earring stud and is easy to remove and change to create a different look. There is also a screw shaped option that looks like a stud until the last half of the “post” curls in a half circle.

These nose rings are twisted into the piercing and the turn holds them in place, which means you don’t need to hold them in from the inside of the nostril.
