ZOOM is a very popular teeth whitening process. Tooth enamel and tooth dentin can become stained and discolored, not always because of poor oral care but because certain foods, drinks and smoking tobacco products have the tendency to stain as does aging. The New York ZOOM teeth whitening process uses a combination of hydrogen peroxide; a bleaching agent, and bright light from the chair side light source. The light accelerates the whitening process; it rapidly breaks down the bleach allowing oxygen to penetrate the enamel and into the dentin. The stains are eliminated and the tooth surface is left unchanged.
- Treatment planning:The first step is for your dentist to conduct an in-depth examination of your teeth to ensure the New York ZOOM teeth whitening process is an acceptable solution. During the examination your dentist may give you pointers on how to extend the life of the whitening process; improved oral hygiene and perhaps a change in your diet. Many patients will have their teeth whitened before they have porcelain veneers fitted or undergo composite bonding, both of which are very popular cosmetic dental treatments. By whitening your teeth in advance of these treatments you will get a better match between teeth that have been restored and those that are in their natural state.
- The whitening procedure:The New York ZOOM teeth whitening process takes less than an hour. After the teeth have been professionally cleaned the dentist will cover the gums and lips, of course the teeth are left exposed. The hydrogen peroxide bleach, which is in gel form, is applied to the surface of the teeth. The gel is exposed to the light for about 15 minutes during which time activation takes place. It takes a total of three sessions, all of which are done within the hour.
Your dentist will provide you with a touch up kit that you can use at home to ensure your teeth remain white and bright. Brush and floss as normal and have your teeth professionally cleaned twice a year.
